The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, led the demolition of structures obstructing a major road project in Gishiri a scattered development’ in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
He explained that affected buildings were illegally constructed on a road corridor, delaying the dual carriageway linking Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway.Despite repeated warnings and engagements, residents refused compensation and relocation, making the demolition necessary for timely project completion.The government had allocated funds for compensation and provided a resettlement site, but affected persons declined to accept the arrangement.
Wike stressed that no administration would allow individuals to obstruct crucial infrastructure projects meant for the public’s overall benefit.During the exercise, angry residents took laws into their hands and hurled stones at operators of bulldozers, prompting security forces to intervene with teargas.The minister reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the road project’s completion, directing officials to reassess feasible options for affected residents.
