Rising insecurity, misdirection of government funds to the agricultural sector, and poor implementation of interventions by the Federal Government have been identified as the leading causes of hike in food prices in the country.
Other causes include multiple taxations on inter-state food transportation by federal, state, and local governments. Chief Lamidi Lukman told TRUSTAFRICANEWS the problem we have is that those who are buying it are crying we that are selling it are also crying and it is only God that can help us about it.
Speaking further he said “I can say about it is that everything according to the Lagos state let say from north cause the problem they have in north is too much let say about the pepper, meat, because of what is happening to them makes everything to be too much bad, we thank God we are still managing it I pray God help us about it.”
“What can make everything okay is that when the country settles, because they’re not settled as at now while there is no product in the farm, if there is no product for them and if they can do their duties well in three months or four months time everything will be okay I believe that.”
“That is why I’m saying that when there’s is no product, those boko haram not disturbing them, when they decide to do their farming normally, everything will be okay.”
He commended the state government. Hear him “Lagos state government have been trying because many people have been coming to the market that they want to give them logo and about the food that it is too cost what can solve it is if government support us so we can have more rice and everything because one bag of rice is now 28,000 or 27,000 it too much for one human being to buy”
“Only God can make everything easy but we are praying let God give them the power and authority to do it for us we are praying for the Governors, presidents, chairman of the local governments they have been trying but people is too much in Nigeria especially in Lagos state may God be with us”
“If 100 people leave Lagos today 200 people will replace them tomorrow Lagos state is a very large place and populated place”
“In Nigeria generally if we all have a farm that in 3 months time we are going to sell 100 bags of the rice in Ape or agege or from ikorodu rice can come all these rice we are eating formerly the Nigeria rice is not much we are eating foreign rice only God can show them the way to know where they are taking us to because no kind of advice we can give now cause we don’t have the power if we say to them now open the border is not only rice that would come in other things will follow it cannot be only food so is only God can protect us”
“I don’t have the authority I can only buy and sell in the market am a buyer and seller in the market only God can provide for us, Nigeria now should be put into prayer. We pray everything would be okay.”
He stressed the need for government to also locate the real farmers with access to lands. To do this, he said there is a need to liaise with organisations piloting such programmes.
