Rohr won’t spring surprises for Super Eagles call-ups

Gernot Rohr will not spring any surprises tomorrow when he announces his call-ups for next month’s 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Liberia and Cape Verde.
The coach himself has said he will not risk new call-ups as there is not enough time to train for the two qualifiers next month.
That shuts the door for the time being for on-form Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi and UD Almeria star Sadiq Umar, who could not honour his maiden invitation by the Eagles in March after his club blocked him.
Awoniyi has been flying since he made his permanent transfer to the Bundesliga from Liverpool.
He has thus far netted four goals in all competitions – 2 in the Bundesliga and 2 in the UEFA Conference League.
Midfielder Alhassan Yusuf has within a short time established himself at new Belgian club Antwerp, but he may now have to wait a little longer to get his chance in Rohr’s selection.
However, Rohr will most certainly welcome back Hoffenheim defender Kevin Akpoguma more so because of the mistakes committed by his preferred central defence pairing of William Ekong and Leon Balogun.
Injury has kept out former Germany U20 captain Akpoguma, whose versatility the coach has praised, after he made his debut against Algeria last year.
Captain Ahmed Musa should no longer be a controversial pick for the team as he has shone at new Turkish club Fatih Karagumruk.
Officials have already assured Bordeaux winger Samuel Kalu will return to the fold despite a recent health scare he suffered in France.
The Eagles will tackle Liberia in Lagos on September 3, before they travel for clash against Cape Verde four days later.
