The musical journey of twins musical brother, Psquare could be described as a whirlwind one. Even as an up-and-comer, the duo are usually at loggerhead over who is the most creative – Paul has a keen interest in singing while Peter sway in dance and choreography.
“In Psquare, I am the creative person, I can sit down and tell you what people want to hear, what they want to see, and what they want to learn from Psquare. But it’s not something to brag about,” Peter, one-half of the Afropop group said while squashing the belief that he was just a dancer.
Speaking ahead of their reunion concert, Paul went live on Instagram to tell his critics that he’s more than a singer but a professional dancer.
“You guys think I don’t know how to dance, I am a full-time dancer. I just dey pretend. I hold the dance for Peter when he was sick for four days.”
According to a source, the duo grew fighting and arguing over their unique attributes but their late mother knew how to handle their anger.
In 2012, Psquare’s mother passed on at St. Nicholas hospital, Lagos.
Don’t ever take sides against twins, says Psquare
The sensational singers, PSquare have advised people not to ever take sides against their family.
The twin brothers, who recently buried their hatchets after 5 years of a break up made this statement during a live interview on Instagram.
“People should be mindful of what they say and learn never to take sides against two brothers. Those who took side during our split are the suffering our reunion now,” Peter Okoye.
Intervening, Paul explains what he observed during their reunion party.
According to him, the reunion is about him and his brother but their family, friend, and fans who take sides following their feud.
“During our reunion celebration, we saw a close friend who are forgotten they were friends just because they take side. So, people should just chill and enjoy our music, and not for the hate. Our reunion is not about the Psquare but the entertainment industry as a whole.”
Though the speculations of their breakup started around 2015 but the identical twins’ acts went their separate ways in 20I7 after a series of allegations against each other on social media.
In 2016, Peter took to his Twitter handle to denounce their elder brother, Jude Okoye as PSquare manager for the fourth time since their careers began.
In an interview with The NET Magazine the following year, Peter revealed that the drama began after his twin began posting the lyrics of most of their songs on Instagram, claiming he wrote it.
This made called for the termination of the agreement between the group through Psqure’s lawyer, Festus Keyamo on September 21, 2017.
The group allegedly lost several endorsement deals worth millions of naira
As soloists, Paul who goes by the moniker Rudeboy released several singles including Nkenji Keke, Fire Fire, Audio Money, Reason With Me, while the latter Peter aka Mr. P dropped a mid-tempo songs Cool it Down, For My Head, My Way, One More Night, Palomo among others under the imprints of P-Classic Records.
Despite breaking records as separate entities, thousands of fans always clamouring for the Afropop twins’ reunion. Some passionate Nigerians once urged business magnate, Aliko Dangote to settle the rift between the twins.
“The truth is, as a solo artiste Peter and I recorded hit songs but there was so much anger among the fans that make part of the ear block. Despite our separation, we both kept Psquare alive as still go on to perform some of Psquare’s big songs,” Paul claimed.
November 17 was an emotional moment for lovers of Psquare after a video of the sensational twins hits social media. In the clip, the duo and their elder brother, Jude was seen hugging each other in Peter’s resident in Lagos.
The pair also followed each other on Instagram as Paul took to his page to celebrate his twin brother’s 40th birthday anniversary.
“Two heads are better than one,” he captioned their picture.
The wife of Paul, Anita Okoye also organised a party with her children to celebrate Paul and Peter’s reunion.
According to her, she is excited for not taken sides during the breakup between her husband and his twin brother.
“This is the best birthday present either of you could receive. Thank you for letting me have such a great relationship with both of you independent of your rift… I am delighted I didn’t let your coconut heads let me choose sides.”
…restore their lost glory
After years of side-projects and differences, Psquare is on a redemption journey to restore its lost glory.
December 25, Peter and Paul staged a reunion concert tagged:’ Psquare Reactivated’ to officially announce their comeback.
During their performance, the band paused to apologize for their separation.
“We apologise for breaking up, deep apologies to our fans all over the world. We want everyone around the world to know that we are asking for forgiveness,” Psquare said.
The group has been terminating different shows in Nigeria to concentrate on their first concert after their breakup.
“We’ve decided not to perform at different events just to focus on our concert. We you want to see us together after many years of hiatus, let it be at our concert” Peter said
Continuing he said, “Selecting songs for our concert is what broke me down because we have about 60 songs and we’ve been rehearsing back to back for three weeks. We have dance rehearsal scheduled between 12 pm- 3 pm, band rehearsal for 5 pm – 9 pm then will enter the studio by 11 pm till midnight.”
Paul added: “We’ve been rehearsing like hell.”
Last week, Peter was reportedly hospitalized due to the stress of holding a proper comeback show. This led to the postponement of the concert to Christmas Day against initiated date, December 18.
“4-hour won’t be enough for us to thrill our teeming fans with dancing songs. But go get your ticket and come and experience the meaning of Detty December,” Paul said.
PSQUARE ACTIVATION STORY
Born and grew up in Jos, Plateau State by Mr. and Mrs. Moses Okoye who hailed from Ifite Dunu in Anambra State.
The twins with their seven siblings attended Tempest Private School, Laranto, Jos, Saint Murumba College before gaining admission into the University of Abuja.
The duo began to sing from their secondary school as a group called ‘Smooth Criminals where they danced and mimed songs of international singers like Michael Jacksons, M. C. Hammer, and Bobby Brown.
Professionally, they started singing during a music competition organised by Benson and Hedges in Jos in 2003.
According to the identical twins, they were initially referred to as Peter and Paul but they later adopted the name Psquare after an MC introduced them by the name at a concert.
The young and talented performers later defeated other contestants to emerge the winner. The victory earned the ticket to represent the northern zone at the grand finale in Lagos which they still won.
The outstanding choreography, dancing steps blended with their smooth vocal prompted the organisers to sponsor their debut album, Last Nite on July 18, 2003.
The album won several award recognitions including ‘Best Performing RnB group in Nigeria’ at the 2004 Amen Awards. They were also nominated as Most Promising African Group at the 2003 Kora Award help in South Africa.
Psquare stamped their feet in the Nigerian music scene with the sophomore album titled, ‘Get Squared’ the album was released along with video collections.
Since then the twins have continued to be a streak of game-changing with their inventive colourful music videos and dancing steps and tight hooks.
