FirstBank, West Africa’s premier financial institution and leading provider of financial inclusion services, has announced its sponsorship of the Lagos command performance of “Eni Ogun – The Noble Warrior.” This theatrical production honors Professor Wole Soyinka as part of the celebrations marking the global literary icon and national treasure’s 90th birthday.
“The Noble Warrior – Eni Ogun,” produced by Cash Onadele and directed by Oriade Adefila, will be performed at the Muson Centre on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at 6:00 PM.
This initiative is a significant step in FirstBank’s First@art program, which aims to support the value chain of Nigerian arts and cultural development, thereby fostering the growth of the nation’s creative economy. It also recognizes the immense contributions and achievements of Prof. Wole Soyinka, Africa’s first Nobel Laureate.
“Eni Ogun – The Noble Warrior” tells the historic tale of the natives’ successful defeat of colonial forces, repositioning historical truths and highlighting the repercussions of cultural invasions. The story parallels the life of Wole Soyinka, drawing comparisons between the protagonist, Oluwole, a noble warrior, and Soyinka’s own persona as a fighter and humanitarian over his 90-year journey.
Toye Arulogun, the Executive Producer, expressed gratitude for FirstBank’s support, stating, “FirstBank’s sponsorship of ‘The Noble Warrior’ is a tribute to a national and global literary icon, aligning with the philosophy of the First@art initiative, which supports creative arts and promotes cultural development.”
FirstBank’s Group Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, Ms. Folake Ani-Mumuney, added, “We are proud to be part of this special tribute to Professor Wole Soyinka, a true literary giant whose contributions to literature and humanity continue to inspire us all. Our sponsorship of ‘The Noble Warrior – Eni Ogun’ is a modest way to demonstrate our appreciation for his contributions to Nigerian literature and culture. His writings have transcended borders, and he remains a true embodiment of the power of art to uplift society. For 130 years, FirstBank has been woven into the fabric of society, enabling success in the creative industry value chain through our First@arts initiative, and ‘Eni Ogun’ is another opportunity to reinforce this impact and support small businesses.”
First@arts consolidates FirstBank’s efforts in the arts, supporting the entire creative arts value chain by providing financing, showcasing, and facilitating industry successes. Among the initiatives under First@arts is DecemberIssaVybe, which offers memorable homecoming experiences, family reunions, festivals, and communal engagements, creating fun-filled and unforgettable moments in December.
