The Edo State Government has accused Philip Shaibu, the reinstated former Deputy Governor, of orchestrating violence in Benin City, under the guise of executing a Federal High Court judgment. This judgment, however, is currently subject to an appeal and a motion for stay of execution.
In a recent development, the state government alleged that Shaibu hired armed thugs who caused widespread chaos, culminating in the death of a police inspector, Akor Onuh.
A petition submitted by State Solicitor General Prof. Faith Osadolor, on behalf of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, claims that Shaibu flouted legal protocols by recruiting heavily armed individuals, including Tony Adun (aka Tony Kabaka), Daniel Eromosele (aka Pikolo), Efe Stewart, and others. This group allegedly engaged in violent activities, resulting in significant destruction in Benin City and the death of Inspector Onuh.
The document, addressed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Zone 5, is titled “Request to Investigate a Case of Conspiracy to Commit Murder, Malicious Damage to Property, Breach of Public Peace, and Assault Occasioning Harm by Former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Hon. Philip Shaibu and his Cohorts.”
The petition states: “We extend our deepest condolences to the Nigeria Police Force on the tragic loss of Inspector Akor Onuh, who was killed during the attack on July 18, 2024, allegedly instigated by former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu. Inspector Onuh’s sacrifice in the line of duty will be remembered with honor.”
The petition further outlines that on July 17, 2024, a Federal High Court in Abuja ruled to nullify Shaibu’s removal as Deputy Governor. However, an appeal and motion for a stay of execution were filed immediately, with copies served to all parties, including Shaibu.
Despite this, on July 18, 2024, Shaibu allegedly mobilized a group of armed thugs, including Tony Adun, Daniel Eromosele, and others, to enforce the court’s judgment prematurely. This resulted in violent attacks at Benin Airport and throughout the city, targeting road users, destroying property, and leading to the death of a police officer.
The petition concludes by urging the police to conduct a thorough investigation, hold Shaibu and his associates accountable, and ensure that justice is served, emphasizing that no one is above the law.
