HOLLYWOOD – “President Biden has shown what true leadership is. He’s saving democracy once again. We’re all so excited to do whatever we can to support Vice President Harris in her historic quest,” George Clooney said in a statement to CNN.
Clooney, a major fundraiser for Democratic candidates and longtime Biden supporter, recently urged the 81-year-old president to step aside for a younger candidate, citing concerns over the party’s chances against Donald Trump in the upcoming election.
“I love Joe Biden,” Clooney wrote in The New York Times, surprising many. “I consider him a friend, and I believe in him… But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time.”
With Biden leading the ticket, Clooney warned that Democrats would struggle to win in November, lose control of the Senate, and fail to gain a majority in the House of Representatives.
Amid growing pressure, Biden abruptly announced on Sunday that he would leave the race and endorsed his vice president. Since then, Harris has received overwhelming support from party leaders and a surge of donations from voters.
