BREAKING: NATO’s New Ukraine Aid Initiative Set for Washington Summit

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy

NATO is set to unveil a new initiative at an upcoming summit in Washington, designed to solidify Western aid for Kyiv in its ongoing conflict with Russia. This plan, championed by NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg, aims to ensure continued support for Ukraine at the current levels and to distribute contributions more equitably among member nations.

However, leading power the United States has insisted that this non-binding pledge be reviewed next year. According to diplomats, Washington argued that it is legally impossible for the government to commit future administrations to specific spending levels.

Another contentious issue was a proposal to allocate future aid based on each country’s gross domestic product (GDP). This idea faced opposition, led by Turkey, and was ultimately dropped. Instead, the final text will include a reference to “fair burden sharing” and the aim for more proportional contributions, without explicitly using GDP as a scale.

The pledge forms part of a broader package for Ukraine that NATO is preparing for the Washington summit. This package is expected to include stronger language in support of Kyiv’s bid to join NATO, although no concrete invitation for membership will be extended.

Additionally, the alliance plans to take over the coordination of weapons deliveries to Ukraine, ensuring these supplies are insulated against potential policy changes, particularly in the event of a return to the US presidency by Donald Trump.
